Durga Puja is the greatest and biggest puja of the Bengalis. It is the puja of Goddess Durga. Durga Puja is the lifeline of the Bengalis. It the celebrated all over the West Bengal in India during the Autumn season. It is a five-day festival and during these five days there is a festive kind of atmosphere. It is celebrated all over Bengal with great flamboyancy. Durga Puja in Bengal has to be seen to be believed.
Modern Durga puja is much more different from the puja of the ancient time. The first Durga Puja in Bengal was celebrated in Garh Jungle near Malan Dighi about 800 years ago. It is a place in the midst of forests. It is located on the eastern part of Durgapur and is about 25km from Bolpur. Garh Jungle also known as Dharma Garh is an important place of Hindu Mythology. The Ashram of Medhas Muni was situated in the Garh Jungle. King Surath the emperor of the Vanga Dynasty had its capital in this region. According to some historic articles, it is known that after winning a battle, King Surath had performed a puja of Goddess Durga in the Ashram of Medhas Muni about 800 years ago. King Surath being a devotee of Goddess Durga also established about 16 temples in that location. However, at present only two of them survives, The Shyamarupa Mandir and a Shiv Mandir.
A perfect time to visit this place is during the Durga Puja. During the puja a large number of tourists come here from all over the Bengal. This place is well connected by roads through Durgapur or via Panagarh-Moregram state highway. The silence of the forest road through the jungle is also a pleasant and delightful journey.
